Healthy eating on the go may sound almost impossible, but it's not. Business travelers and others who spend lots of time on the road know the tricks to eating healthy when away from home. And with a little bit of planning and the proper tools, you can too.
Whether you are in the airport on in the car, here are some tried and true tips for healthy eating on the way to your destination.
Breakfast
If you are getting an early start and don't have time for breakfast at home, head for the coffee shop. In the airport or on the road, a coffee shop is the most convenient place to find healthy eating options in the early hours. Go ahead and order your favorite non-fat latte but skip the bagels, muffins and pastries. Instead, opt for fruit, yogurt or cereals with low fat milk. If you must have something heartier, order an egg sandwich but hold the cheese, bacon and sausage.
Lunch
Healthy eating at lunchtime can be tricky. The delicious smells from the airport pizza counter or that KFC off the highway can be tempting, but you have the willpower to pass on by. While sit-down restaurants are likely to offer more healthy eating options, you might be surprised at what you can get away with at a fast food joint. Save fat and calories by ordering a grilled chicken sandwich instead of a burger and remove the bun. Drink water or tea instead of soda and skip the french fries altogether. And beware the fast food salad. Just because it has lettuce in it, that doesn't mean it's healthy. Choose garden salads without all the extras and ask for light dressing.
Dinner
If dinnertime finds you at the airport or in the car, head for a sit-down restaurant for the most healthy eating options. But before you sit down, check out the menu to see if they offer grilled meats, salads and fresh vegetables. Avoid anything that is described as fried, battered, crispy or creamy. If your entree comes with a sauce, ask for it on the side. Or, skip the entree altogether and make a meal out of healthy mixed vegetable side dishes.
If you are serious about healthy eating, the thought of being away home and surrounded by temptation might be a little stressful. Calm your nerves by being prepared ahead of time. Check out The Fast Food Explorer for a comprehensive list of fast food menu items and their nutritional values. Or load up your iPhone with apps that will help you stay on track when you are away from home. Go Meals is a free app that not only provides a database of the nutritional value of over 20,000 restaurant menu items, it also has a food log that helps you keep track of what you've eaten.
