The Atkins Diet is the invention of Dr. Robert Atkins. In 1963, Atkins tried a low-carbohydrate diet after reading about one in the Journal of the American Medical Association. So pleased was Atkins with the results that he invented his own version. The Atkins Diet is a high-protein, low-carbohydrate program that allows the dieter to eat proteins such as meat, cheese and eggs but limits carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, pasta, sugar and bread. The theory of the Atkins Diet is that carbohydrates encourage insulin, which makes you feel hungry, leading to eating and weight gain. But since the Atkins Diet limits carbohydrates, fat that is stored in your body is used for energy instead. When your fat is burned for energy it leads to weight loss.
Restricting vegetables and fruit is the opposite of what many weight loss programs advocate. As a result, when the Atkins Diet came on the scene it was considered by some to be an unhealthy diet that should be avoided.
